BROWNWOOD – May 15, 2025 – May graduate Lexi Ewen ’25 recently received a bachelor’s degree from HPU in social work with a minor in cross-cultural ministry. Originally from Idalou, Ewen believes that God called her to attend HPU.
“The social work department caught my eye, and it was important to me to be able to learn the field of social work within a faith-based environment, which I could do here,” Ewen said.
Ewen added that the community at HPU has made a great impact on her life.
“It has been my home for four years and will continue to be my home for more years to come,” Ewen said. “I have found lifelong friendship here and have had opportunities to grow and learn in ways that I never knew were possible. The professors at HPU are amazing, and they care deeply about their students. This truly is one of the best places to learn and grow in your faith and your professional journey.”
For Ewen, social work is her passion, and it has grown over the years.
“I love people, and I have a heart for those who are hurting,” she said. “Everyone needs to be shown love and to feel worthy, no matter their culture, background, race, ethnicity, or gender.”
Ewen’s passion for loving and helping others is based on John 13:14, where Jesus washes his disciples’ feet.
“Jesus called the outcasts to be his disciples, and he used them in such mighty ways that we can observe through scripture,” Ewen said. “We are to be the same love that Jesus is to those around us, and the career of social work allows me to be in places to do that. Social work can be a hard career, but it can also be rewarding. I want to share Christ with everyone around me and help people understand that they are worthy to be here and that the struggle that is right now is not forever.”
Ewen also received two awards at the recent Academic Awards Convocation. She received the Cross-Cultural Ministry Award from the School of Christian Studies, and the Outstanding Bachelor of Social Work Student of the Year award from the Department of Social Work.
Ewen plans to enroll in the Master of Social Work program at Angelo State University. She will stay in Brownwood with her husband and plans to work in the Brownwood area as a social worker.
“Social work has a special place in my heart and always will, and I am excited to begin this journey that God has been calling me to for a long time,” Ewen said.
