BROWNWOOD – May 6, 2025 – Howard Payne University’s School of Science and Mathematics announces the merging of two current science departments. The Departments of Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences have had a long-standing relationship of strong collaborations through academics and student support. The departments will combine their strengths into a newly formed Department of Natural Sciences beginning this fall.
Dr. Kristen Hutchins, dean of the School of Science and Mathematics, noted, “this realignment is something we’ve considered for a while and now is a great time to make this shift. Our degree offerings in biology, biomedical science, and chemistry will remain the same at this time, but our administrative function will join together in supporting the faculty, students and programs in this newly structured department.”
Dr. Chelsea Miranda, assistant professor of biology, will serve as the chair of the Department of Natural Sciences.
“Dr. Miranda will be an excellent fit for this role as she has established great relationships with our students and faculty, while also looking to the future with a vision for potential growth,” shared Dr. Hutchins. “She is a 2025 recipient of the ‘Excellence in Teaching’ award at HPU and is passionate about innovative teaching and student learning support in Christian education. I’m excited to see her bring her talents and servant heart to this leadership position.”
In addition to the Departments of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Information Systems, the School of Science and Mathematics will now also house the Department of Engineering, chaired by Dr. Philips Agboola, professor of engineering.
“Dr. Agboola is a world-renowned researcher in engineering and an excellent teacher,” said Dr. Hutchins. “His energy and passion for the field are evident in his work.”
All four STEM-related programs have ongoing collaborations through summer research experiences and degrees programs like software engineering and biochemistry. The organization of the programs together further supports HPU’s work toward providing excellent academics and student experiences.
Dr. Donnie Auvenshine, vice president for academic affairs, stated, “This restructuring and administrative streamlining is a good example of the School of Science and Mathematics’ commitment to continuous improvement in its work. I applaud the efforts of Dean Hutchins, Dr. Miranda and Dr. Agboola to continue to strive to offer our students an excellent Christian education in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, and computer information services.”
