HPU Cheer and Athletics Give back

By Mackynlie Conklin | HPU’s organizations always show support during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month, however, last semester the HPU Cheerleading Team and Athletic Department decided to take it one step further. Walker Cancer Center at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

HPU Cheerleading and Athletics raised $560 for the Walker Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund by fundraising with pink shirts for HPU students and fans.

HPU Cheerleading Coach Richelle Hair said she was “excited [they] were able to partner with Brownwood Regional Medical Center and the Walker Cancer Center last semester to raise money for the patient fund. The cheerleaders worked hard to make this happen, and I am proud of their desire to give back to the community. I know how much this money will impact many patient’s needs.”

The Walker Cancer Center in Brownwood does so much to provide oncology care to Brown County and surrounding areas. Typically patients in rural communities such as Brownwood struggle to get the proper care they need.
Gayle Hightower, a social worker at Brownwood Regional Medical Center said that, “Many times, we have a great number of patients who need fuel, lodging, transportation and medication on top of the treatment they need. These donations and funds go directly to them and their needs.”

This year on February 4th the HPU Cheerleading Team and Athletic Department presented a check to the Walker Cancer Center from their Pink T-shirt fundraiser.

HPU Cheer and Athletics hope to promote this every October and continue to support the Patient Assistance Fund with this fundraiser.
