By Katie Cravey | Howard Payne University’s School of Music and Fine Arts performed their annual Evening of Theatre last Friday and Saturday.
Theatre students performed a variety of monologues and musical numbers.
Evening of Theatre is a unique performance since the students are able to choose whatever they would like to perform. If the student has a dream role, this is their chance to be able to execute it!
“Evening of theatre this year was amazing,” said Sara Heinrichs, a senior theatre major. “It was great to see all the incoming freshman showcase their talent. I was truly blessed to be a part of such an amazing cast. Great last evening of theatre,” she said.
Some students were able to use Evening of Theatre as an outlet to convey a difficult message.
“Evening of Theatre is always such a blessing to do. It was such an honor to perform alongside such talented people, and to do a few acts with some of my dear friends,” said Taylor Davis, a senior studying music education.
“However, when I chose to do ‘I got flowers today’ that was the most special thing of all to me. It was hard, and very touchy to do, but it needed to be done. I’m a survivor of dating violence, so I wanted to be a voice for those who can’t speak. I wanted my art to reflect something important and that would make a difference. Those who are caught in the middle of dating violence/domestic abuse were able to have their voice heard,” said Davis.
From a heavy scene, to a rap number in the Broadway show ‘Hamilton,’ to a humorous monologue, each student participating in Evening of Theatre was able to become someone and make a scene come to life.
“Evening of Theatre is a great way to really show off the talents of the students that go to HPU. It gives us an opportunity for creative expression in a safe environment as well as a chance to perform things that we’ve never had the chance to perform before,” said Jake Bowren, a senior Theatre major.
Evening of Theatre was able make its audience laugh and cry with short scenes that the students in the HPU theatre department performed.
