BROWNWOOD – April 24, 2025 – The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is providing Howard Payne University student Maddie King, junior strategic communication and Guy D. Newman Honors Academy major from Abilene, the opportunity to be their first communication intern.
“We are pleased to have Maddie as our first intern with the Baptist World Alliance,” said Dr. Julie Welker, professor of communication and chair of the Department of Communication. “When I was presented with this possibility, I knew Maddie was the perfect fit.”
King will use what she is learning in her strategic communication classes as the BWA intern. She will be assisting them with writing assignments, social media and photography for the next few months all leading up to the Baptist World Congress in July.
“Maddie’s skill set as a strategic communication major make her the ideal candidate,” said Welker. “She excels in writing, photography and design. I’m excited to see how her talents, coupled with her love for the Lord and reaching different people groups, add to her experience in the internship.”
Dr. Chris Liebrum, vice president for external affairs, has long been involved with the BWA and is excited to continue that relationship through HPU and the communications intern.
“How exciting that Maddie has been selected to serve as an intern with the Baptist World Alliance Communications Department,” said Liebrum. “Howard Payne recently became a full member of the worldwide family of the Baptist World Alliance. This new internship will help to strengthen HPU’s ability to network with 53 million Baptist in 134 countries around the world.”
King is thankful for the experience and the ability practice her skills with the Baptist World Alliance.
“I am so excited for this incredible opportunity,” said King. “I not only get to practice what I am studying to do, but I also get to make an impact for the Kingdom through the Baptist World Alliance.”
King will travel to Brisbane, Australia, with the BWA for the 23rd Baptist World Congress on July 7-12. While she attends the congress, she will be helping the BWA with writing stories and taking photos to capture everything happening during the event.
“I still can’t believe that I am going to experience this,” said King. “Traveling to Australia and attending the Congress to hear how God is moving around the world is a crazy thing to wrap my head around, but I am so grateful, and I know God is going to use it make an impact on my life.”
