HPU golfers excited for upcoming season

By Bailey Farmer | Coming off of last season’s finish at the conference golf tournament in April, the Howard Payne women’s golf team is excited to start up this season. Adding in two transfer sophomore students from East Texas Baptist University, Sommer Hummel and Maddi McGarrh, and a freshman, Mallory Garcia, to the two returners from last season, senior Klaye Georges, and sophomore Bailey Farmer, there are high hopes for this year’s golf team.

“I think it will be a fun year. We have a pretty young team and the girls are very strong competitors. It should be a good season,” said Georges.

In addition, Georges has been doing a lot more to prepare for the fall opener tournament in September which will be in New Mexico.

“A lot of range balls were hit, and I spent many hours working on my putting to make sure it is perfected for the upcoming tournaments,” she said.

Men’s Golf

With a seventh place finish in last year’s ASC Conference golf tournament, the 2019-2020 Howard Payne men’s golf team is not satisfied and ready to start the upcoming golf season. The men’s golf team is looking stronger than ever. Despite losing three seniors last year, the team has three returners, Juniors Kyle Anderson, Kaleb Brown, and Chase Day, along with one transfer student and four freshmen.

Anderson is excited to see how well the new team plays together. “I am most ready to see how all of the new golfers interact with each other because we were all very close last year,” he said.

Brown stated that he thinks this year’s team is going to have better tournament finishes because there is a lot of potential in the team this year as a whole.
