BROWNWOOD – September 20, 2024 – The Howard Payne University Sumners Scholars hosted two classes from Early High School in the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom building on Friday, September 20. The campus visit was held in conjunction with Constitution Day, which was September 17. The students were from classes taught by HPU alumni Brittany Dunlap ’09 and Sidney Sisemore ’21.
The Academy tour highlighted critical milestones in the development of freedom principles (from Greek Democracy to the US Constitution). After the tour, the high school students enjoyed lunch, where the Sumners Scholars shared the importance of civic responsibility and information about the Sumners program. Each high school student was given a gift bag with patriotic memorabilia.
The Sumners Foundation Scholarship Program provides scholarships to rising juniors at Howard Payne University who have an interest in civic leadership. The program allows these students to attend unique seminars and conferences throughout the year and provides funding for the Scholars to host events for the community.
